Malaysia’s varied terrain makes it great for the avid mountain biker. Over the hills, through the valleys and on rugged roads, every mile is an adventure. Not far from Kuala Lumpur are popular biking routes within FRIM (Forest Research Institute of Malaysia). Just outside the capital is Batu Dam, offering single track trails through scenic jungles. The climbs and dips are challenging enough but if it’s technical riding you seek, opt for Bukit Kiara. In Pahang, Cameron Highlands is often said to be one of the best mountain biking locations in the country, thanks to its cross country trails and a 47-km loop through the Bertam Valley and Boh Tea Plantations of the Cameron Highlands, known as the Jim Thompson Loop.

Langkawi has long earned its reputation as a destination for eco tourism and adventure sports, thanks to the prestigious annual Tour de Langkawi and Langkawi International Mountain Bike Challenge. Cyclists have the best of both worlds here: lush jungle terrain and stunning tropical island landscapes. In Sabah, add a dash of culture into your bowl of adventure as you cycle to the northern-most point of Borneo known as the Tip of Borneo (Tanjung Simpang Mengayau) and explore the fascinating culture of the Rungus people along the way; many of whom still reside in longhouses.
